A disorganized fridge is a food waste trap. When you can't see what you have, you buy duplicates or let fresh produce rot. Here are our top 5 tips for keeping your cool (literally).
1. The "Eat Me First" Box
Designate a specific bin or shelf area for items that need to be consumed within the next 2-3 days. When you open the fridge looking for a snack, look here first.
2. FIFO (First In, First Out)
It's not just for grocery stores. When you buy new milk, put it behind the old milk. Push the older items to the front so they are the easiest to grab.
3. Label Your Leftovers
We've all played "Mystery Tupperware Roulette." Don't do it. Keep a roll of masking tape and a sharpie in the kitchen. Label every container with what it is and when it was made.
4. Store Things Correctly
- Milk: Door storage is too warm. Keep it on a middle shelf.
- Eggs: Keep them in their original carton on a shelf, not the door.
- Vegetables: Use the humidity drawers. High humidity for leafy greens (closed vent), low humidity for fruits that rot easily (open vent).
5. Use Nid
Okay, we're biased. But digital tracking is the ultimate organization hack. When you know exactly what's in your fridge without even opening the door, you're winning.
